Press release, May 14th, 2014 – Friday, May 16th, AFI Cotroceni will be the venue where the Pellegrini Trophy fencing competition will take place. The competition reaches its fifth edition and includes senior, female and male foil contests.
The competition’s finals will take place in the ice rink area of AFI Cotroceni starting with 05:00 pm. Then, the winners’ award ceremony will be held by present and former Romanian performers of fencing.

The basis of Romanian fencing was made by Pellegrini family, headed by Romeo Pellegrini, who made ??his debut as coach of the Energy Sports Club in 1976. He was the exponent of the third Pellegrini generation who inherited the passion for fencing; both his grandpa and his father were the organizers of the first fencing movement in the country. Among the athletes trained by them are Ana Pascu, currently the president of the Romanian Fencing Federation, and the Olympic champions Maria Vicol and Tanase Muresanu.
The results of the Pellegrini family dedication occurred shortly when their students won numerous titles and medals in all age groups in National Championships. Gymnasts coached by Romeo Pellegrini brought the first international results at “Friendship” tournament and the Youth World Championships in Stuttgart and Lausanne. Among the champions at the Olympic Games and world and European championships are Dorina Mihai, Catalina Gheorghitoaia, Irina Covaliu.
AFI Cotroceni has a long tradition in supporting Romanian athletes performances. Among the most recent initiatives organized so far include Champions Week, a week dedicated to the celebration of Romanian sport and its champions.
